"Tipping Point" excerpt

For anyone interested (Hi Mom!), I've posted an excerpt from my "National Novel Writing Month" effort. The novel is entitled "Tipping Point."

Click here to go to the NaNoWriMo Authors page where the excerpt appears.

The excerpt is only about 1,000 words, but if I chose a good passage from what I've written so far, after you've read it you'll want to read the rest of the novel. Too bad it won't be finished for another three weeks! (If then!)

You should never use "mom" and "interested" in the same sentence.

Come now. I think you're being a little hard on the old girl. She may not be very PROACTIVE in her communications with her kids, but I wouldn't necessarily describe her has "disinterested." Besides, what does she have to report? "Today, Wayne went out and checked the rain guage and bitched about how late the mail was."

How about, "Yesterday one of our close relatives died. The funeral is Saturday."
Or, "Your sister is having Thanksgiving at her house this year. Are you coming?" But she would never ask about your plans, would she?

By the way, about your novel, I think your excerpt does make you want to read more. The first few paragraphs are a bit stiff, but then I read a lot of Nora Roberts, so what do I know?

Hee hee. I imagine all the paragraphs are going to be a bit stiff...at 2200 words a day, there's little time for polish. I might go back and try to make it more "writerly" if I think the final product might be worth sending to someone. But right now, it's like laying words on with a trowel.

In that case, good on ya! Write on, Bro.
